Extortion investigations in Calgary

Overview

Calgary police have launched investigations into large-scale extortion networks targeting the city’s South Asian community. In one major probe, 16 individuals were charged with 56 offences, including threats, intimidation, and violence. Investigators identified 49 extortion-related incidents in Calgary, 19 of which involved shootings used to pressure victims into making payments. Most of the accused are Indian nationals of Punjabi origin residing in Canada on work or student permits.

Separate from the broader probe, police have also charged three individuals in a specific case involving WhatsApp threats and a shooting at a woman’s residence. In this instance, perpetrators used personal details to demand money, followed by a shooting at the victim’s home. Charges have been laid against a 17-year-old for facilitating communication and a 23-year-old for providing the victim’s personal information. Police are still seeking a 21-year-old suspect wanted in connection with the vehicle used during the shooting.
