Calgary police charge three in WhatsApp extortion and shooting case

The Calgary Police Service has charged three individuals in connection with an extortion case involving WhatsApp threats and a shooting at a woman’s residence. The investigation began on March 25, when a victim started receiving unsolicited text and voice messages demanding money. The perpetrators utilized detailed personal information, including the victim’s full name, home address, business details, and family information, to make explicit threats of violence.

Approximately 12 hours after the initial messages, an unidentified person fired a gun at the victim’s home before fleeing in a vehicle. No injuries were reported in the shooting.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested on July 29 and charged with one count of extortion for allegedly facilitating communication between the victim and the threat makers. He has since been released from custody.

On September 8, 23-year-old Kanureet Kaur of Chestermere was arrested and charged with extortion for allegedly providing the personal information used to identify and intimidate the victim. She is scheduled to appear in court on October 6.

Police are currently seeking the public's help to locate 21-year-old Tanveer Singh of Calgary, who is wanted on a warrant for possession of stolen property over $5,000 related to the vehicle used during the shooting.
