Calgary police officer shot during traffic stop and park chase

A Calgary police officer was shot during a traffic stop in the Spruce Cliff neighbourhood on Monday morning. The incident escalated when a suspect, described by police as an organized crime figure, opened fire from a vehicle and then fled into Edworthy Park.

During a pursuit through the park, the suspect allegedly continued to fire at officers and bystanders. The chase included a carjacking of a vehicle operated by the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railway, which the suspect abandoned after it became stuck. A police helicopter assisted in tracking the individual through heavy brush.

The suspect was later found dead in the Bow River from what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The injured officer was transported to a hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has launched an investigation into the shooting and the suspect's death.
