Violent incidents and shootings in Calgary

Overview

In early August 2026, Calgary experienced several violent incidents involving firearms and police. Initial reports detailed two separate shootings: one at the Victoria Park/Stampede LRT station involving two wounded individuals, and another in the Bridlewood neighbourhood where a man was charged following an officer-involved shooting.

Violence escalated later in the month during a traffic stop in the Spruce Cliff neighbourhood. A suspect, identified by police as an organized crime figure, shot an officer and led authorities on a pursuit through Edworthy Park. The chase involved a carjacking of a Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railway vehicle. The suspect was eventually found dead in the Bow River from what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The injured officer was reported to be in stable condition. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has launched investigations into the officer-involved incidents.
