Dolly Parton Day observed globally to honor singer's legacy

Communities across the United States and internationally are observing September 25 as Dolly Parton Day to honor the late country music icon following her death at age 80. The date, 9/25, serves as a tribute to her hit song “9 to 5.”

In the U.S., California became the first state to officially establish the annual observance through Senate Bill 931. Other recognitions include proclamations in New York, Texas, and various municipalities such as Nashville, New Orleans, and San Francisco. Nashville is planning tributes including pink lighting, music performances, and a fireworks display at 9:25 PM.

The celebrations heavily emphasize Parton’s philanthropic legacy, specifically her Imagination Library, which provides free books to children aged 0-5. The Dollywood Foundation has designated the day as “Give Like Dolly Day” to support literacy initiatives globally. Programs in cities like Manhattan and Nashville are coordinating book drives to continue her mission of promoting early childhood literacy.
