Overview

Following the death of music icon Dolly Parton on August 25, 2026, her global literacy initiative, the Imagination Library, has seen continued activity alongside emerging funding challenges.

In Missouri, state budget cuts—including a $4 million loss in the fiscal year 2027 operating budget—have led the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to stop accepting new applicants. Existing enrollees in Missouri will continue to receive books until the remaining $2 million in funds is exhausted.

In response to such challenges, local entities are launching preservation efforts. In Colorado, the Early Childhood Council Logan, Phillips, Sedgwick (ECCLPS) has initiated a fundraiser via a ‘Colorado Gives’ page, seeking donations to sponsor children at an annual cost of $31 each.

International and local efforts remain active. In Manchester, United Kingdom, the volunteer-run Manchester Imagination Library has distributed over 50,000 books since 2018 and has reassured families that monthly deliveries will continue without interruption as part of its ‘Year of Reading 2026’ project. In the United States, the Jeannette Public Library in Pennsylvania has provided over 1,400 books through the program. Since its 1995 launch, the Imagination Library has distributed more than 3 million books across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Ireland.
