California faces rising housing and family living costs

California continues to face significant economic pressures regarding housing and family affordability. In San Diego, real estate experts predict property values will continue to rise. The city’s median sale price reached approximately $990,000 for the three months ending in July, which is 145% above the national average. Inventory in San Diego County decreased by 5.6% in August, and more than a third of homes sold above their asking price.

Beyond housing, the cost of supporting a single-income household remains exceptionally high. A study by SmartAsset indicates that California ranks as the second most expensive state for families to maintain a stay-at-home parent. To support one child and a non-working partner, a single income in California must be at least $101,213 annually. This makes California one of only two states, alongside Hawaii, where the required single-income threshold exceeds $100,000.
