In San Diego, property values have risen sharply, with median sale prices reaching approximately $990,000 for the period ending in July—a figure 145% above the national average. Decreasing inventory and high demand have resulted in more than a third of homes selling above their asking price.

Beyond general real estate trends, the state faces high costs for family maintenance. California is identified as the second most expensive state for families to support a stay-at-home parent, requiring a single income of at least $101,213 annually to support one child and a non-working partner.

The extreme nature of the market is further illustrated by luxury property comparisons. A $9.9 million home in Carpinteria, California, provides significantly less living space than a $10.2 million estate in Iowa, highlighting how locational advantages drive prices. Danielle Hale, chief economist at Realtor.com, noted that this disparity demonstrates how “disconnected from the rest of the US California home prices are.”
