Gavin Newsom considers commuting 563 California death sentences

California Governor Gavin Newsom is reportedly considering commuting the death sentences of all 563 inmates currently on death row to life in prison without parole. This potential move, which could be one of his final acts before leaving office in January, follows a botched execution in Tennessee involving Christa Pike.

Newsom, a Democrat who has long opposed capital punishment, previously issued an execution moratorium in 2019 and ordered the dissolution of California's death row in 2022. California has not carried out an execution since 2006. If implemented, the mass conversion of these sentences would represent the largest clearing of a death row in modern United States history.
