California launches $270 million EV rebate offering up to $3,500 off new electric cars

California will roll out a $270 million rebate program aimed at reviving electric‑vehicle (EV) sales after the federal clean‑vehicle tax credit was eliminated. The plan, signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom on July 13, provides up to $3,500 for first‑time buyers of new EVs priced below $50,000 and $1,750 for used EVs priced below $25,000. Funding is split equally between the state and participating automakers, with $135.5 million earmarked from the state budget and a matching contribution from the industry.

The program, called “My First EV,” is expected to launch by the end of summer. While the state has not yet released a list of qualifying manufacturers, the California Air Resources Board said it anticipates publishing the roster next month. Rivian and Lucid are exempt from the $50,000 price cap, whereas Tesla models must fall under that threshold to qualify. Officials hope the rebates will lower the upfront cost barrier, stimulate demand, and support California’s climate goals as nationwide EV adoption slows.
