US law enforcement increases patrols for Labor Day weekend safety

Law enforcement agencies across the United States are launching heightened patrols and enforcement operations to ensure road safety during the Labor Day holiday weekend.

In California, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has initiated a 78-hour enforcement period running from September 4 through September 7. This crackdown focuses on removing impaired drivers—including those under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, or prescription medications—from the road. The CHP noted that during last year’s holiday period, over 1,200 impaired-driving arrests were made, resulting in nearly 500 crashes and eight deaths. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is also deploying additional officers and establishing specific DUI checkpoints at locations such as Florence Avenue and the Pacific Coast Highway.

In Texas, the Department of Public Safety and local sheriff’s deputies are increasing visibility on West Texas highways to target impaired, distracted, and speeding drivers, while also emphasizing the importance of proper seat belt usage. Similarly, Kentucky State Police are participating in Operation C.A.R.E., a national traffic safety initiative, to combat distracted and impaired driving through increased highway and interstate patrols.
