US state impaired driving enforcement campaigns
Overview
Law enforcement agencies across several US states have launched increased enforcement campaigns to combat impaired driving and boating under the influence (BUI) during the late summer season. In Illinois and Iowa, authorities are focusing on both roadway and water safety. The Illinois Liquor Control Commission is warning boaters against BUI, noting that seven of twelve boating fatalities in 2025 involved alcohol or drug impairment. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources reported 72 boating-related arrests for operating under the influence in 2025. Iowa is participating in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ project from August 19 to September 7, following data that one third of the state’s roadway fatalities during the final four weeks of the previous summer were caused by impairment. Delaware and Michigan have also initiated high-visibility patrols ahead of the Labor Day weekend. In Delaware, the Office of Highway Safety and state police are conducting patrols through September 8. Delaware is also launching ‘Saturation Saturday’ on August 29, a coordinated effort involving the Delaware State Police and several local departments across New Castle, Kent, and Sussex counties. This follows data showing drunk driving fatalities in Delaware have increased by 3.2% since 2019. Michigan authorities are expanding road patrols through September 7, reporting that approximately 39.1% of the 46 driver fatalities recorded during Labor Day holiday weekends from 2021 to 2025 involved alcohol or drug impairment. As the holiday approaches, enforcement expands to Georgia, North Carolina, New York, and California. In Dutchess County, New York, law enforcement is increasing patrols through September 7 as part of the statewide ‘STOP-DWI’ campaign.
