California law mandates drink lids and drug-testing kits at bars
Governor Gavin Newsom has signed legislation into law that removes the expiration date for requirements mandating that bars and nightclubs provide drink lids and drug-testing devices to patrons upon request.
Under the regulations, Type 48 licensees must offer drink-spiking test kits at low or no cost. These kits must be capable of detecting at least one of the three most common substances used in drink spiking: ketamine, Rohypnol, or GHB. Testing tools may include straws, stickers, or test strips.
Additionally, establishments are required to post notices regarding their product stock on both physical premises and websites to allow patrons to check availability in advance. The Alcoholic Beverage Control agency conducts periodic inspections to ensure compliance and provides education to staff and management.
