California legalizes plug-in balcony solar systems

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed legislation, including Senate Bill 868, authorizing residents to install plug-in solar systems on balconies, patios, or in backyards. Authored by State Senator Scott Wiener, the law simplifies the use of small photovoltaic systems with a maximum combined capacity of 1,200 watts of alternating current per household.

These portable arrays connect directly to standard 120V domestic electrical outlets, bypassing the need for complex interconnection agreements with utility companies or extensive infrastructure upgrades. This technology is particularly beneficial for renters and apartment dwellers who lack access to traditional rooftop installations.

According to the Environmental Working Group, these systems can cost between $500 and $1,200. Depending on local electricity rates and household consumption, the investment may be recouped in approximately four years, with the systems potentially covering around 20% of a home's electricity needs. The legislation also supports the use of this energy for electric vehicle charging.
