California provides legal and financial aid to undocumented students

California's higher education system provides various forms of support and financial assistance to undocumented students, a policy that has drawn both significant use and public criticism.

The ‘Find Your Ally’ program, established through a $10 million state investment, provides free legal aid to students across California’s 115 community colleges. Since its inception, the program has served approximately 40,000 students, including 12,000 in the last year alone. Services include DACA renewal assistance—with over $4.5 million paid in filing fees since 2019—and legal consultations for status adjustments such as U visas or naturalization.

Simultaneously, California offers state-funded grants through the California Dream Act, in-state tuition rates, and fee waivers for undocumented students. As of 2023, approximately 102,000 undocumented migrants were attending California colleges. This has led to debate regarding resource allocation, as some residents express frustration over the availability of aid for undocumented students while middle-class families struggle to afford rising tuition costs at major institutions.
