California to convert Golden Gate Fields into public park

California lawmakers intend to allocate up to $125 million in state funds to acquire Golden Gate Fields, a 161-acre former horse racing track located along the East Bay shoreline. The plan aims to transform the site into a public waterfront park, a priority for Governor Gavin Newsom.

The funding is slated to come from Proposition 4, a voter-approved $10 billion bond dedicated to climate projects such as wildfire prevention and land conservation. However, some lawmakers and environmental advocates have expressed concern that diverting these funds could deplete resources intended for other climate priorities.

Golden Gate Fields, owned by the Canadian company The Stronach Group, ceased operations in 2024 following an 83-year history. The Trust for Public Land has previously announced plans to raise $175 million to purchase the land and transfer the deed to the East Bay Regional Park District to ensure public access and coastline restoration.
