Golden Gate Fields park conversion project
Overview
California lawmakers have approved up to $125 million in state funding to assist in the acquisition and transformation of Golden Gate Fields into a large-scale public waterfront park. The 161-acre former horse racing track, which closed in 2024, is located along the East Bay shoreline spanning Albany and Berkeley.
The funding is intended to be drawn from Proposition 4, a voter-approved $10 billion climate bond. While the allocation is a priority for Governor Gavin Newsom, some lawmakers and environmental advocates have expressed concern that diverting these funds could deplete resources intended for other climate priorities, such as wildfire prevention.
The Trust for Public Land aims to raise a total of $175 million for the purchase. The goal is to transfer the property to the East Bay Regional Park District to create a continuous coastal open space connecting local landmarks, including Albany Beach, McLaughlin Eastshore State Park, and Point Isabel Regional Shoreline.
