California wine industry downturn drives wineries to diversify
California's wine sector is confronting a sharp decline in sales and a significant reduction in grape acreage. Data from the California Association of Wine Grape Growers show about 38,000 acres – roughly 7% of the state's vineyards – were removed last year, and many producers report sales drops of 25‑30%.
Winery owners are adapting by expanding beyond traditional wine sales. In Fresno's Central Valley, Bret Engelman of Engelmann Cellars has added live music, movie nights, food trucks and even a beer line to attract customers. On the Central Coast, Larry Schaffer of Tercero Wines and Barry White of Ancient Peaks Winery are offering winemaker dinners, private events, zip‑lining and sunset tailgates to generate revenue as visitation and wine purchases fall.
Both regions hope the new business models will stabilize the industry, with owners believing a balance will eventually be found despite the current challenges.
