California wine industry faces massive vineyard removals

Overview

California’s wine industry is undergoing a massive structural correction driven by a prolonged slump in demand. Wine sales have dropped by more than 20% over the last five years, leading to a surplus of grapes and falling prices.

Viticulturists are removing more than 100,000 acres of healthy vineyards to align with long-term consumption trends, following periods where as much as 1.2 million tons of wine grapes went unharvested. To mitigate losses, growers are being forced to take approximately 25% of the state’s vineyards out of production. Farmers face difficult choices: harvesting at a loss, leaving grapes to rot on the vine, or uprooting vineyards to plant more profitable crops like almonds, walnuts, pistachios, or olives.

The economic downturn has intensified, with a 2026 Silicon Valley Bank report indicating that approximately half of California wineries are currently operating without a profit. This follows a $1.2 billion revenue loss in 2025. The crisis is fueled by shifting consumer preferences—particularly among younger generations opting for beer, spirits, or cannabis—and the rise of weight-loss drugs, which have weakened direct-to-consumer sales and tasting-room traffic.

Jeff Bitter, president of Allied Grape Growers, noted that this year, about half of the grape crop entered the harvest season without sales contracts. Compounding domestic issues, trade tensions have severely impacted exporters. McManis Family Vineyards has listed 11 vineyards and its main facility for sale for $22 million, citing a steep decline in exports to Canada following Canadian bans on American alcohol in response to U.S. tariffs.
