Calimaya Residents Protest Over Persistent Landfill Odors

Residents of Calimaya, Mexico, blocked the main avenue to demand the immediate closure of the La Estación landfill, citing unbearable foul odors, health concerns and a decline in property values. They called for an audit by the State of Mexico’s environmental protection agency (PROPAEM), disclosure of the landfill’s remaining capacity, and studies on possible groundwater contamination.

The municipal government acknowledged the long‑standing odor problem but said the landfill complies with regulations and is not the primary source. Officials pointed to a nearby illegal dump behind Valle de las Fuentes as a major contributor and warned that fixing the issue will require extensive works, funding and coordination with state and federal authorities, meaning no quick solution is expected.
