Mexico community protests over landfill and roads

In early August 2026, residents of Calimaya in the State of Mexico blocked a major avenue to demand the shutdown of the San Antonio landfill and the repair of local streets, while nearby Catemaco protesters halted a federal highway to press for completion of an abandoned road project and a missing culvert.

A few days later, Calimaya demonstrators returned, this time concentrating on the persistent foul odors from the La Estación landfill. They called for an audit by the state environmental agency, disclosure of the landfill’s remaining capacity, and studies on possible groundwater contamination. Municipal officials acknowledged the odor problem but argued the landfill complies with regulations, attributing much of the issue to an illegal dump behind Valle de las Fuentes and warning that a quick fix would require extensive coordination and funding.

The two snapshots illustrate a continuing local dispute over waste‑management practices and infrastructure delays, with community actions escalating from broader demands for closure and road work to more specific health‑related grievances and official rebuttals.
