Callao begins construction of world's largest papal statue
Construction is underway in Callao, Peru, for what is expected to be the world’s largest statue dedicated to a Pope. The 14-meter monument, honoring Pope Leo XIV, is currently approximately 40% complete.
Led by sculptors Rafael Gutiérrez and Deyvi Wong, the project involves a team of workers creating a structure with a 10-meter metal core and a 4-meter base. The statue will be finished with fiberglass to create a marble-like effect and is designed to withstand winds of up to 120 kilometers per hour. The work is being fast-tracked to meet a deadline of late October, ahead of the Pope’s scheduled visit to Peru from November 11 to 16.
Once finished, the sculpture will be installed in Parque Gaelito in Ventanilla. Callao Mayor César Pérez has called for prayers for the Pope’s health as the Pontiff undergoes a medical procedure. The monument serves as a tribute to the Pope’s previous connection to the region, where he served as an apostolic administrator.
