Calls for Stricter Safety Controls on Italy's Villoresi Canal after Fatal Drowning

Former mayor of Nerviano, Massimo Cozzi, urged tighter monitoring of the Villoresi Canal, saying the waterway poses lethal hazards. He highlighted recent legislation that bans any swimming except during officially sanctioned sports events with professional rescue teams, noting the canal’s artificial currents and sudden whirlpools can trap even experienced swimmers.

Cozzi’s appeal follows the death of a 25‑year‑old rider who drowned in the canal near Parabiago. He called for more frequent inspections and clearer signage to prevent similar tragedies, emphasizing that “life is sacred and must be protected.”
