Mediterranean and regional drowning incidents – Summer 2026
Overview
In August 2026, drowning incidents in Greece reached 168 fatalities for the summer season. A significant majority of these victims were Greek citizens over the age of 60. Regional data indicates that Attica and Central Macedonia reported the highest numbers, with 29 deaths each, while Crete and the South Aegean recorded 18 each. Beyond sea-related accidents, recent tragedies involving minors occurred in swimming pools in Paros, Messinia, and Crete. Experts from Safe Water Sports noted that drowning can occur in as little as 20 seconds, often linked to a lack of parental supervision. In response, municipalities like Tempi have issued safety guidelines, including recommendations to swim in pairs, avoid swimming after eating or consuming alcohol, and maintain constant supervision of children. There are also ongoing calls to address legislative gaps regarding safety standards for non-tourist swimming pools. To address high mortality rates among seniors, the Greek Ministry of Health, the National Public Health Organization (EODY), and Safe Water Sports launched the ‘Safe Sea for 60+’ campaign. This initiative follows data showing that 284 seniors died in the sea last summer, accounting for approximately 80% of the 373 average annual sea deaths. The campaign advises older swimmers to avoid swimming alone, stay near the shoreline, and consult doctors if they have chronic conditions. Authorities also noted that many elderly individuals swim early in the morning before lifeguard coverage begins. Recent incidents include the death of an 18-year-old woman at the Dermata Waterfalls near Veria, who reportedly fell into a lake while being photographed. On Crete, a 36-year-old Turkish national drowned at Stalida Beach, and a 41-year-old French woman died following a collapse while hiking near Balos.
