Calogero Brancatelli elected head of Messina council Public Works commission

The Messina city council completed the formation of its new commission leadership. Calogero Brancatelli, a councillor from the Basile mayoral list, was elected president of the Public Works, Infrastructure and Civil Protection commission with 15 votes in favour, six blank votes and one vote for Nicoletta D’Angelo. Valentina Capone was named vice‑president alongside Anna Sorbello, while Mirko Cantello of the Federico per Messina list won the presidency of the Budget commission, also with 15 votes. Capone was appointed vice‑president of both commissions, prompting criticism from some councillors about the concentration of duties.

The newly formed Budget commission began work on a budget amendment allocating roughly €4 million for services to non‑self‑sufficient citizens, €53 000 for additional social services, and €850 000 for barrier‑removal projects. The debate highlighted procedural concerns, with council members questioning the absence of the mayor and finance assessor during the vote and urging a direct dialogue with the administration.
