Messina council wage dispute & De Luca shifts to Rome
Entities: Federico Basile · Fratelli d’Italia · Messina Metropolitan Council · Sud Chiama Nord · Fratelli d'Italia
Overview
Mayor Renato De Luca continues to promote the Super ZES tax‑incentive scheme and a ten‑point Palermo plan while the Messina Metropolitan Council, elected in late July, finalised its eight permanent commissions. The majority bloc secured all presidencies and the first commission began work on TARI exemptions for low‑income families. Council discussions on the second vice‑presidency remain open, with Antonella Feminò again mentioned as a candidate.
The public‑city employer’s staff unrest has deepened. After earlier protests by more than a thousand workers over unpaid wages and delayed contract conversions, the local movement “Partiamo da qui” on 20 July demanded clarification of the “technical, accounting and control” reasons for delayed accessory salaries. Municipal unions CGIL, UIL, CSA and SIL announced a strike for 31 July, while CISL withheld participation pending a Labour Court ruling on the city’s unilateral amendment of the collective contract.
Cateno De Luca, leader of Sud chiama Nord, held a fully‑booked convention at Palermo’s Teatro Politeama on 18 July, unveiling the “Governo di Liberazione” ten‑point programme. He declared the movement’s negotiations with Sicilian parties concluded and shifted to national secretariats in Rome, planning an October conference and a nationwide list for upcoming elections. He reiterated calls for early regional elections and the resignation of current regional parliamentarians.
