Cambodia claims eradication of online scam compounds after major crackdown
Cambodian authorities, through the Ad-Hoc Commission for Combating Online Scams (CCOS), announced that large-scale online scam compounds have been completely eradicated from the country. Senior Minister Chhay Sinarith reported that a year-long crackdown from July 2025 to August 20, 2026, involved investigating 793 suspected locations and conducting direct actions at 624 sites.
The operation resulted in the detention of nearly 30,000 suspects representing 39 nationalities and the rescue and deportation of 58,266 foreign nationals. The government acknowledged that while large compounds are gone, criminal syndicates may have shifted to decentralized operations in guesthouses, apartments, and cafes.
However, international organizations and independent experts have expressed significant skepticism. Amnesty International and anti-trafficking consultant Mark Taylor noted that the claim lacks independent verification and that there are credible indicators that scam operations and foreign worker recruitment continue. These cybercrime networks, often run by Chinese syndicates, are linked to massive financial losses and human trafficking, with the UN estimating global scam losses reached between $88.3 billion and $114.1 billion in 2025.
