Cambodian crackdown on online scams

Overview

The Cambodian government has taken various measures to address online fraud and cybercrime. The Telecommunications Regulator of Cambodia (TRC) issued an advisory regarding sophisticated scams where fraudulent entities claim to offer “account protection services” for social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Telegram. These scammers falsely claim to have internal connections with tech companies to steal money and personal data.

In a broader crackdown, the Ad-Hoc Commission for Combating Online Scams (CCOS) announced the eradication of all large-scale online scam compounds in the country. Between July 2025 and August 2026, authorities inspected 793 locations and conducted crackdowns on 624 sites, resulting in the detention of nearly 30,000 suspects and the rescue and deportation of 58,266 foreign nationals.

While officials report success, independent experts and international organizations remain skeptical. Critics cite significant global economic losses attributed to scamming and suggest that recruitment and operations may still be ongoing despite the government's reported achievements.
