Vietnam targets tourism as spearhead economic sector
Vietnam is implementing a new Politburo resolution to establish tourism as a spearhead economic sector. The policy aims for high-quality, smart, and green growth, targeting a direct GDP contribution of 10-12% by 2030 and 14-15% by 2045.
To support this vision, the 20th Ho Chi Minh City International Travel Exhibition (ITE HCMC 2026) recently opened, featuring over 520 exhibitors and 260 international buyers from more than 40 countries. The event emphasizes MICE tourism (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) as a strategic product to drive regional connectivity and economic value.
Regional cooperation is also a key focus. Cambodia is participating in ITE HCMC 2026 to promote cross-border tourism initiatives, such as the “Two Destinations, One Journey” package. Additionally, ministerial-level cooperation between Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar is being strengthened to foster international visitor growth across the Mekong subregion.
