Cambodia tourism diversification and regional cooperation

Overview

Cambodia is implementing various strategies to diversify and expand its tourism sector. In early August 2026, the country focused on cultural rebranding through a partnership between the Cambodia Tourism Board and Phare Ponleu Selpak. This collaboration, supporting the 13th Tini Tinou International Circus Festival, aims to establish an “Angkor to Arts Corridor” to attract cultural visitors to regions beyond traditional temple sites.

By late August 2026, efforts shifted toward regional cooperation. At the 20th International Travel Expo Ho Chi Minh City (ITE HCMC 2026) in Vietnam, themed ‘Vibrant Connections – Global Destinations’, the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism promoted cross-border initiatives. Under the ‘Visit Cambodia in Green Season’ campaign, Cambodia showcased integrated travel products including Caravan Tours, Self-Drive Tours through international border gates, and Mekong Cruise Tours.

The expo, which officially opened on August 27, also highlighted the importance of MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism. Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra advocated for regional cooperation within Southeast Asia and the Mekong subregion to create a competitive, shared MICE space. To complement these regional goals, Cambodia promoted the ‘Two Destinations, One Journey’ package, designed to attract international travelers to both Cambodia and Vietnam through a unified travel experience. This initiative aligns with broader regional efforts to strengthen ministerial-level cooperation between Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar to foster international visitor growth across the Mekong subregion.
