Cambodia protests Thai PM's visit to disputed An Ses border area
Cambodia has issued a formal diplomatic protest against Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul following his August 23 visit to the disputed An Ses border area. The Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized the visit as an unauthorized attempt to assert illegitimate claims over Cambodian sovereign territory, which Phnom Penh alleges has been illegally occupied by Thai forces since last year.
In response, Thailand’s Joint Information Centre stated that the Prime Minister’s visit was intended to encourage troops and was not an attempt to demarcate the border. Thai officials questioned the authority of unilateral declarations regarding the border dispute.
Additionally, the Cambodian government clarified that it is not preparing criminal charges or arrest warrants against the Thai Prime Minister. Officials noted that recent reports of potential prosecution stemmed from an independent commentary by the Documentation Center of Cambodia, rather than official government policy. Cambodia maintains its commitment to resolving the border dispute through peaceful, legal mechanisms.
