Cambodia-Thailand border dispute
Overview
Tensions escalated between Cambodia and Thailand following a visit by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to the disputed An Ses border area on August 23. The Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a formal protest, describing the visit as an unauthorized attempt to assert “illegitimate claims” over territory that Phnom Penh alleges has been illegally occupied by Thai forces since the previous year.
In response to the dispute, Prime Minister Anutin addressed the situation during a meeting in New York, stating that Thailand is prepared to protect its sovereignty but sees no immediate threat of violence or loss of territory. He noted that MOU 44 has been canceled and that Thailand intends to set the terms for future negotiations once neighboring countries are ready.
Regarding maritime resources and energy security, the Prime Minister indicated that Thailand continues to utilize its own gas resources in the Gulf of Thailand and expressed confidence in long-term energy stability due to new natural gas discoveries in the Andaman Sea.
