Cambodia-South Korea cooperation reduces online scam reports
South Korean Overseas Koreans Agency head Kim Kyeong-hyeop visited Phnom Penh to meet with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sar Sokha. The meeting focused on the results of bilateral law enforcement cooperation against online scam crimes.
Kim reported that requests for support from Koreans regarding online scam victimization in Cambodia have dropped by more than 90% following the establishment of a joint response system and the launch of a 'Korean Desk'.
Cambodian authorities have conducted extensive crackdowns on cybercrime, resulting in the closure of 86 online scam complexes and the arrest of approximately 29,000 suspects from 39 different countries. While these measures have been successful, officials noted a 'balloon effect' where criminal organizations move to smaller, less conspicuous locations. To counter this, Cambodian police are expanding their response to include blocking fraudulent phone numbers and bank accounts, including the pilot operation of a mobile application called 'Kapea Scams'.
During the visit, Kim also met with the local Korean community to discuss economic challenges caused by the decline in tourism and to address issues regarding education and residency for overseas Koreans.
