Cambodia warns of fraudulent social media account protection scams

The Telecommunications Regulator of Cambodia (TRC) has issued an advisory warning the public about a sophisticated scam involving fraudulent “account protection services” for social media platforms.

Scammers are targeting users of Facebook, Instagram, and Telegram by claiming they can provide paid protection or guarantees for accounts that have been suspended, deactivated, or shut down. These fraudulent entities often use direct messages, public comments, or third-party websites to establish a false sense of legitimacy.

To deceive victims, the scammers falsely claim to have direct internal connections with social media companies and possess proprietary technical tools to reinstate compromised accounts. The TRC warns that these offers are fabricated and intended to steal money and sensitive personal data from individuals seeking to recover their digital identities.
