University of Cambridge professor Jason Arday resigns amid plagiarism probe

Jason Arday, the University of Cambridge's youngest Black professor, has resigned following allegations of plagiarism and scrutiny regarding his academic credentials and personal biography. The controversy began after researcher Nathan Cofnas raised concerns regarding textual overlaps in Arday’s 2015 PhD dissertation and other publications.

In addition to plagiarism claims, Arday faces scrutiny over alleged fabrications in his curriculum vitae, including claims of visiting professorships at institutions like Ohio State University and the University of Glasgow, both of which have denied his involvement. Further allegations involve inconsistencies in his personal narrative and claims regarding charitable fundraising and athletic achievements.

In response, the University of Cambridge has announced it will conduct a review of its senior academic hiring processes and its research misconduct policy. The institution is also continuing an investigation into Arday's qualifications and honorary appointments. While Arday maintains his innocence—arguing that the scrutiny is racially motivated and noting that a previous investigation by Liverpool John Moores University cleared him—a group of Cambridge academics has called for an independent inquiry to address potential reputational damage.
