Cambridge University and Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded the doctorate, have defended Arday, describing the claims as a "vile smear campaign" and stating that a confidential review found his PhD to remain valid. Critics, including emeritus professor Robert Dingwall, say there is a prima facie case and call for a rigorous examination. Supporters have signed an open letter alleging a coordinated effort to delegitimize a successful Black academic.
