Cameroon awards CFAF 500 million to ten model municipalities
Cameroon has distributed CFAF 500 million to ten municipalities during the second edition of the Awards for Model Councils in the Execution of Public Investment Projects. Held in Yaoundé on September 22, 2026, the ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Alamine Ousmane Mey.
The award recipients, representing each of the country's ten regions, each received CFAF 50 million. The winning municipalities are Ngaoundéré III (Adamawa), Kobdombo (Centre), Nguelebok (East), Petté (Far North), Loum (Littoral), Touroua (North), Nkambé (North West), Pété-Bandjoun (West), Zoétélé (South), and Idabato (South West).
This year's financial envelope has doubled from the previous edition, which awarded CFAF 250 million to five councils. The selection process evaluated municipalities based on project maturation, contracting, execution, and monitoring-evaluation.
Officials noted that annual transfers to decentralized local authorities have risen significantly, increasing from CFAF 58 billion in 2020 to CFAF 158 billion in 2025. Arnault Christian Emini, Director General of the Economy and Public Investment Programming, stated that increased resources necessitate greater responsibility and higher performance standards for municipal executives.
