Ebola and Cholera outbreaks escalate in DRC and Cameroon

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is facing a severe Ebola epidemic caused by the Bundibugyo virus. Recent data indicates the outbreak has surpassed 4,200 confirmed cases and approximately 1,900 deaths. The World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that the virus likely began circulating in February, four months before the official epidemic declaration on May 15. This delay has allowed the virus to outpace the response. The outbreak, centered in the Ituri province, is now the second largest in history by case numbers. Health officials expressed concern that roughly 70% of patients are dying in their homes, suggesting a lack of community engagement or hospital access.

Simultaneously, Cameroon is struggling with a rapid cholera surge in its Far North region. The epidemic has infected over 800 people and caused 25 deaths within a single month. Laboratory tests identified Vibrio cholerae O1 Ogawa as the pathogen. The outbreak has spread across nine health districts and into the Minawao refugee camp, which is operating at over 300% capacity.

In Chad, authorities have also increased vigilance in the Lake Province, specifically in Kaya and Baga-Sola, following reports of 46 cholera cases and heightened fears of further transmission.
