Cholera outbreaks in Chad and Cameroon
Overview
Cholera outbreaks have been reported in Chad and Cameroon during mid-2026.
In Chad, an outbreak declared in late July resulted in approximately 240 confirmed cases and 13 deaths, primarily concentrated in the capital, N'Djamena, and the northern Hajer Lamis region. Health officials have implemented a vaccination campaign, immunizing over 50,000 people, as inadequate sanitation and limited access to safe drinking water continue to drive the spread. By August 10, authorities increased vigilance in the Lake Province, specifically in Kaya and Baga-Sola, following reports of 46 additional cholera cases.
Simultaneously, Cameroon has experienced a cholera epidemic in its Far North region, affecting nine health districts. The outbreak has significantly impacted the Minawao Refugee Camp, which is operating at over 300% capacity. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of Vibrio cholerae O1 Ogawa. As of August 10, the epidemic in this region has infected over 800 people and caused 25 deaths within a single month.
