Cameroon seeks EITI suspension lift and strengthens fuel supply coordination
Cameroon is taking steps to address both its extractive industry transparency status and its domestic energy security. At the 10th EITI Global Conference in Brussels, the interim Minister of Mines, Industry, and Technological Development, Professor Fuh Calistus Gentry, presented corrective measures to lift the country's suspension from the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).
The suspension, which began in February 2024, was due to insufficient civil society participation and constraints on freedom of expression. To address this, Cameroon has committed to appointing an assistant national coordinator, publishing oil contracts from the National Hydrocarbons Corporation (SNH), and establishing a complaint mechanism for civil society restrictions.
Simultaneously, the Cameroon Petroleum Depots Company (SCDP) held a meeting in Douala to improve the national supply chain for fuel and domestic gas. To meet rising demand, the SCDP is focusing on infrastructure modernization, logistics, and safety. Key initiatives include adopting palletization for handling domestic gas cylinders to reduce handling risks and improve transport and storage conditions.
