Cameroon extractive industry transparency issues

Overview

Cameroon’s extractive sector has faced significant transparency and operational challenges. The country was placed under temporary suspension by the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) following a low score of 53 points, largely attributed to weaknesses in civil society engagement and constraints on freedom of expression.

Financial difficulties have further complicated compliance, with reports of unpaid arrears for EITI reporting work. Additionally, major mining projects, such as the Geovic Cameroon project in Lomié, have remained inactive despite holding significant cobalt, nickel, and manganese reserves, leaving local communities without promised infrastructure or employment.

In response to the EITI suspension, the interim Minister of Mines, Industry, and Technological Development presented corrective measures at the 10th EITI Global Conference in Brussels. Proposed actions to lift the suspension include appointing an assistant national coordinator, publishing oil contracts from the National Hydrocarbons Corporation (SNH), and establishing a complaint mechanism to address civil society restrictions.
