Cameroon's MRC party faces internal disputes ahead of leadership vote

The Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC) is facing internal tension ahead of its extraordinary elective convention scheduled for October 17 in Yaoundé. The party is working to organize a leadership succession following the resignation of its founder, Maurice Kamto.

Two main candidates are competing for the presidency: Tiriane Balbine Noah, the current interim president, and Pierre Emmanuel Binyam. The transition has sparked debate within the party, including disagreements over whether the candidates should participate in a public debate. While supporters of Binyam have called for a televised debate to test leadership, the Noah camp has declined, citing a pre-established campaign schedule.

Additionally, some party members have filed administrative appeals to contest the conditions of the convention, seeking to have the meeting annulled due to alleged irregularities. These internal disputes and legal challenges are testing the cohesion of the major opposition party as it attempts to define its future political direction.
