This stance has raised concerns regarding the MRC’s ability to participate in the 2027 legislative and municipal elections. On September 8, 2026, Maurice Kamto resigned as president of the MRC, effective immediately. In a letter to the party board, Kamto cited the ‘superior interest’ of the party, its members, and the ‘People of Change’ as his reasoning. His resignation coincided with that of first vice-president Mamadou Mota, who attributed his departure to ‘constant harassment’ by the administration. Following the announcement, Aboubakary Siddiki, president of the Mouvement Patriotique du Salut Camerounais (MPSC), issued an open letter rejecting the resignation, urging Kamto to stay and stating, ‘You do not have the right to leave the ship because it is pitching.’ Reactions to the leadership vacuum have been mixed.
