Camilo Escalona, former Chilean Senate President, dies at 71
Camilo Escalona Medina, a prominent figure in Chilean politics and a historical leader of the Socialist Party (PS), has died at the age of 71. He passed away at the Clínica Indisa in Santiago following a battle with aggressive prostate cancer.
Escalona held several high-ranking positions, including serving as the President of the Chilean Senate between 2012 and 2013. His political career spanned five decades, beginning with his involvement in the Socialist Youth in 1969. Following the 1973 coup d'état, he lived in exile in Austria, Cuba, and East Germany before returning clandestinely to Chile in the 1980s to participate in the struggle for democracy.
Upon the return to democracy, he served as a deputy and a senator, representing various regions including the Metropolitan Region and Los Lagos. He also led the Socialist Party through multiple terms. The Chilean government has decreed two days of national mourning to honor his legacy and his contributions to the country's democratic transition.
