Death of Chilean politician Camilo Escalona
Overview
Camilo Escalona Medina, a prominent Chilean politician and former Senate President, has died at the age of 71 at Clínica Indisa in Santiago. His death followed a battle with aggressive prostate cancer that began in April 2024.
Escalona’s political career spanned five decades, beginning as a student leader during the Unidad Popular government. Following the 1973 military coup, he lived in exile in Austria, Cuba, and East Germany. He returned clandestinely to Chile in 1983 to assist in reorganizing the Socialist Party (PS) during the dictatorship. A central leader of the PS, Escalona served as the party’s Secretary General and held the presidency on five separate occasions.
After the return to democracy, he served as a deputy and a senator representing the Los Lagos, Metropolitan, and Biobío regions, playing a key role in the Concertación coalition. He also served as the President of the Senate between 2012 and 2013.
In response to his passing, the government has decreed two days of official national mourning for September 5 and 6. Political leaders from across the spectrum, including President Gabriel Boric and President José Antonio Kast, have expressed their condolences, recognizing his lifelong commitment to social justice, democratic processes, and Chile’s political transition.
