Camino de Brochero declared Intangible Cultural Heritage in Argentina
The Argentine Chamber of Deputies has officially declared the Camino de Brochero as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Nation. The law passed with 207 affirmative votes, building upon previous Senate approval.
The approximately 240-kilometer route honors the life and work of San José Gabriel del Rosario Brochero, known as the 'Cura Gaucho' and the first Argentine saint born and deceased in the country. The path connects Villa Santa Rosa de Río Primero, the city of Córdoba, and Villa Cura Brochero in the Traslasierra Valley.
To promote religious and cultural tourism, the new legislation introduces a pilgrim passport, similar to the model used for the Camino de Santiago in Spain. This tool will allow travelers to record their progress and support regional services such as gastronomy, local guides, and transport. Pilgrims who complete the full circuit are eligible to receive a special 'Pilgrim of Brochero' accreditation.
The 13th annual pilgrimage is scheduled for September 12, featuring a 28-kilometer trek through the Traslasierra Valley.
