Campania environmental groups call for more urban greenery

Environmental and rural culture groups in Campania are calling for a shift in urban planning to prioritize greenery over concrete and asphalt. During discussions held around mid-August, representatives highlighted the lack of vegetation in densely populated areas ranging from Fuorigrotta to Torre Annunziata.

Critics argue that recent public works, such as those in Piazza Municipio in Naples, the Portici seafront, and ongoing projects along the Neapolitan coastline, have prioritized mineral surfaces and architectural aesthetics over climate-resilient design. The groups emphasize that trees and vegetation should be treated as essential climate infrastructure rather than mere decoration, as they are vital for mitigating the urban heat island effect through shading and evapotranspiration.

Improving soil permeability and increasing shade is presented as a necessity to address rising temperatures and ensure the region's metropolitan areas remain livable and attractive for tourism.
