Campania environmental advocacy for urban greenery

Environmental and rural culture associations in Campania have initiated efforts to advocate for improved urban greenery and waste management. In July, the association Circoli dell’Ambiente e della Cultura Rurale appointed new leadership in San Nicola la Strada to focus on recycling, reducing illegal dumping, and urban tree planting. Simultaneously, the Portici branch of the group urged city officials to implement stronger shoreline management and set measurable targets for increasing tree coverage per resident.

By mid-August, these environmental groups expanded their advocacy to criticize urban planning that prioritizes concrete and asphalt over vegetation. Representatives highlighted a lack of greenery in densely populated areas such as Fuorigrotta and Torre Annunziata, arguing that recent public works in Naples and along the Portici seafront have favored architectural aesthetics over climate-resilient design. The groups maintain that increasing soil permeability and shade is essential to mitigate the urban heat island effect and ensure regional livability.
