Naples hosts America’s Cup Preliminary Regatta

The 38th America’s Cup Preliminary Regatta has officially commenced in the Gulf of Naples, following an opening ceremony held at the Nisida Juvenile Detention Center. The event features nine AC40 one-design foiling monohulls from six international teams, including Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, Emirates Team New Zealand, GB1, Tudor Team Alinghi, La Roche-Posay Racing Team, and ARC Team USA.

The competition format consists of eight fleet races, with the top two teams advancing to a decisive one-on-one match race final. These high-speed vessels are capable of exceeding 45 knots.

Beyond the sporting competition, the event carries significant social and regional weight. Italian Minister for Sport Andrea Abodi announced a project to involve inmates from facilities like Nisida in sporting initiatives. Additionally, Marzio Perrelli, CEO of the America’s Cup Partnership, emphasized the event’s role in promoting Naples as an international maritime hub, noting that the 2027 championship is expected to see a woman raise the trophy.
