Campania private healthcare facilities suspend non-urgent admissions

Private accredited healthcare facilities in Campania have suspended non-urgent medical and surgical admissions, effective September 21. The decision by AIOP Campania stems from economic instability caused by frozen medical tariffs dating back to 2012 and a lack of defined budgets and contracts. The association is calling for the release of 35 million euros in residual funds from 2025 and an additional 7 million euros for the current year.

Regional councilors and unions have expressed deep concern, warning that the suspension of elective procedures—including general medicine, rehabilitation, and non-urgent surgery—could overwhelm public emergency rooms. While urgent care and ongoing treatments remain guaranteed, the move has sparked calls for an urgent institutional meeting between the regional government, led by President Roberto Fico, and healthcare providers.

Labor unions, including Cisl and Uil, have criticized the move. Some unions have warned that the suspension harms both patients and workers, while others have cautioned against unilateral actions by private clinics, suggesting that the crisis is exacerbated by how facilities manage high-margin procedures to maximize profits within limited budgets.
